In our ICF Coaching Firm in China, we have worked with a lot of super talented people who always manages to overcome obstacles and succeed. But there are many others who gets stuck in a negative cycle and feel themselves as powerless to escape. In our experience of Executive Coaching in China, we have learned that there is only one key factor that helps people to stand out in the crowd and that is courage. By courage we do not mean a mindless sense of courage rather a reflective, innovative and insightful courage.
However many would say, that courage to them is something that comes from within and is a trait not a skill. But we beg to differ. Courage is a skill which can be taught and learnt to transition oneself to be a great leader. In our Career Transition Coaching in China, we always emphasise on the fact that many skills are needed and can be acquired whenever you are transitioning in your career.
Anyone can develop courage to drive success as a leader. The key is to understand the right kind of courage. Courage as a skill should not be confused with fearlessness. You need to use this skill in a way, that you are posed as a responsible courageous leader.
Four skills for becoming a courageous leader:
- We would start by quoting Rick Riordan, “It takes strength and courage to admit the truth.” Well! As they say truth is bitter and takes a lot of courage to accept the flaws in you and move on better and stronger. A courageous leader becomes a role model for others only when he does not run away from realities and strive to understand the hard truths no matter what the outcome could be. This poses you as a strong leader and your team would look up to you in every situation.
- As James Humes said, “The art of communication is the language of leadership.” A true courageous leader is the one who initiates difficult conversations with his team thereby creating a safe environment where everyone can talk freely and without hesitation. As they say, the art of communication includes the art of listening as well. Listen to what others have to say as well and base your decisions on the inputs of all.
- As it is said that you can lie to the whole world about your fears and insecurities but mirror always says the truth. Rather than running away from your fears embrace them and use them to your advantage. Remember the true courage does not lie in not having fears but accepting your fears with pride and using them to create solutions rather than problems for you.
- “He who is not courageous enough to take risk will accomplish nothing in life.” But taking risk does not mean doing it without weighing consequences. A courageous leader always risk intelligently. Failure is nothing but a package deal when you take risk. Accepting the possibility of failure is what needs strength. There is no learning without risk and there is no success without a healthy environment for experimentation.
Being a courageous leader can go a long way in making you a great leader and a role model for the generations to come. Be a leader who makes a sustainable, successful and ethical business in today’s challenging economic environment. Remember the recipe to success is still the same it is just the cooking style that has changed a bit.
